Background: What’s the essence of a face? Minimalistic black and white line drawings that eliminate the superfluous can help answer that question (Matisse and David Hockney have done it brilliantly in the past – they are my inspiration). With this project I’m challenging myself to draw the essence of an expression. | Assignment: design 13 illustrations of politicians, leaders of majority parties in the Netherlands, who are contesting the 2021 parliamentary general election. Images are meant for editorial or media. | Solution: line drawings based on the person’s actual face. Neutral expressions, not caricatures, and minimalistic.
